What notes are in G minor?
Ascending one octave, play G – A – B♭ – C – D – E♭ – F – G. The final G repeats the tonic one octave higher, which gives the scale its settled ending.
G natural minor is the relative minor of B♭ major. Both open strings it uses, G and D, belong to the key, so the scale carries two free reference pitches.
G minor fingering focus
The two halves look alike and are not. On the G string the second finger is low, drawn back towards the first; on the D string it is the first finger that is low, drawn back towards the open string. Practise the changeover at D until those two shapes stop bleeding into each other.

How to practise this scale
- Tune first. Centre the open strings so they can act as reliable resonance checks.
- Hear the whole scale. Listen for the tonic and the location of each half step before playing.
- Place, listen, then replace. If a note is sharp or flat, lift it and make a deliberate second placement instead of sliding until a screen turns green.
- Add an even pulse. Once each note is stable, keep the bow and rhythm consistent from the first tonic to the octave.
