What notes are in A♭ major?

Ascending one octave, play A♭ – B♭ – C – D♭ – E♭ – F – G – A♭. The final A♭ repeats the tonic one octave higher, which gives the scale its settled ending.

A♭ major is the relative major of F minor. Played from the G string it stays on the two lowest strings, which is where flat keys are usually met first.

A♭ major fingering focus

A low first finger on the G string starts it, and each string needs a fourth finger — D♭ on the G, A♭ on the D. This low on the neck the semitones are at their widest, so the fourth finger has to reach: let the hand rotate towards it rather than stretching away from a fixed thumb.

The interactive map chooses a playable first-position route. Select the note buttons to study one placement at a time before joining the notes into an even bow and rhythm.

How to practise this scale

  1. Tune first. Centre the open strings so they can act as reliable resonance checks.
  2. Hear the whole scale. Listen for the tonic and the location of each half step before playing.
  3. Place, listen, then replace. If a note is sharp or flat, lift it and make a deliberate second placement instead of sliding until a screen turns green.
  4. Add an even pulse. Once each note is stable, keep the bow and rhythm consistent from the first tonic to the octave.
